Tony Ellis, DPT, MS2, ACSM EP-C, USATF1

With a background in physical therapy, exercise physiology, nutrition, strength and conditioning, and as a USA Track & Field Level 1 coach, Tony is uniquely and ideally positioned to facilitate optimal performance, rehabilitation, injury prevention and wellness for runners and athletes of all abilities, from beginner to elite. With a professional background spanning 33 years, Tony’s career working with elite athletes began in 1987 as the Strength & Conditioning Coach for the University of Georgia’s Women’s Gymnastics team. Working with members of the 1984 USA and Canadian Olympic teams and a USA National team member, Tony’s conditioning program played an integral role in the team’s 1989 NCAA Division I National Championship.

Specifically related to runners, he has completed numerous courses addressing the biomechanical analysis of runners’ gait; evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries; injury prevention and wellness; and effective and healthful training methods. Tony has assisted world-class to casual runners. From this focused-perspective, Tony employs a comprehensive integrative approach to his clinical evaluation and care of competitive and recreational runners.

Tony is committed to maintaining a high level of orthopedic manual therapy proficiency and current evidence-based sports medicine treatment methodology, evidenced by attendance to regular professional continuing education courses offered by the Hospital for Special Surgery and other notable organizations.

Competing in events ranging from the 5th Avenue Mile to 22 marathons, Tony is an avid runner.  At age 55, he maintains a vigorous training regimen and ambitious race calendar. His age-informed wisdom, academic and clinical background are a tremendous asset in consulting and treating his clients and patients.

Tony is a member of the Prospect Park Track Club, New York Road Runners and USA Track and Field.

He has served on the medical team for the ING New York City Marathon, Ironman USA Championships, Ironman North American Championships (Mont-Tremblant, Quebec), New York City Triathlon, USATF National Club Track & Field Championships, USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships, IAAF World Indoor Championships, and USA Track & Field Olympic Trials. He is an active and enthusiastic volunteer for New York Road Runner events. He has also developed a series of community outreach programs to foster healthful participation in walking and running activities for the Brooklyn community.

Tony is a professional member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); the American Physical Therapy Association: Sports Physical Therapy Section (APTA – SPTS); Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition (SCAN) Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics; and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
