Youth Sports Physical Therapy & Developmental Sports Conditioning

Youth Developmental Sports Conditioning addresses the integration of the anatomical structural and physiological evolution of growing children and adolescents with acquisition of viable biomechanically adept sport related skills. Youth Developmental Sports Conditioning is based on the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model.

Programs are implemented to:

  • Maximize physiological functional capacity (cardio-respiratory efficiency & endurance)
  • Build a strong foundation and provide pathway for young athletes to participate regularly in a variety of youth sports; helping young athletes avoid injury, develop fundamental health fitness and sport specific skills, perform well recreationally and competitively and maintain optimal health for long-term physical wellness.
  • Address biomechanical and dynamic stability of the peripheral segments (ankles, knees, hips, elbows, shoulder-scapula complex) and core (abdominal, pelvis, trunk & spine) with adequate strength, endurance and neuromuscular control that is critical to successful athletic performance and minimizing injury risk.
  • Effect practical recommendations for proper training and developing a resilient youth athlete. Accommodate special developmental considerations that elite youth athletes require as they grow and mature.
  • Address the components of Sport-Specific Conditioning
    • Agility & Speed
    • Biomechanical (Movement Pattern) Efficiency
    • Cardio-Respiratory Endurance
    • Core/Peripheral Segment Stabilization
    • Coordination
    • Dynamic Balance
    • Dynamic Postural Alignment & Stability
    • Functional Muscular Strength & Endurance
    • Functional Joint Range of Motion & Muscle Flexibility
  • Emphasize viable nutrition to foster optimal health, support effective training and recovery, and facilitate adept recreational and competitive performance.
    • Provide interactive learning opportunities for schools and local teams to augment the degree of nutrition literacy that connects the act of eating with fueling the body and mind for optimal development and anatomical/structural replenishment and recovery.
    • Promote higher nutrition literacy to encourage cultivating a healthy lifestyle that extends beyond the scope of sports performance.

Youth Developmental Sports Conditioning is provided for individuals that seek to improve their comprehensive state of physical conditioning for sports participation, at the recreational and competitve elite level.

Assessment (2.5 hours)

Comprehensive clinically informed initital assessment including:

  • Medical & Health History
  • Cardio-Respiratory Functional Capacity Assessment (VO2)
  • Resting Metabolic Rate/Basal Metabolic Rate (RMR/BMR) Assessment with Total Metabolic Rate (TMR) Estimation
  • Musculoskeletal Structural Assessment
    • Postural Alignment
    • Functional Joint Range of Motion & Muscle Flexibility
  • Neuromuscular Assessment
    • Functional Strength & Endurance
    • Dynamic Balance
    • Core/Peripheral Segment Stabilization
    • Proprioception & Agility Coordination
    • Movement Pattern - Biomechanical Efficiency
      • Identify biases to unresolved chronic conditions, muscular weakness/imbalance, and/or postural malalignment that influence inefficient movement patterns that adversely contribute to a repetitive cycle
  • Functional Sports Assessment
    • Basic Skills Assessment
    • Performance Skills Assessment

Interventions (1.0 hour sessions)

Youth Developmental Sports Conditioning Packages range from 5 to 50 sessions. Each session includes specific interventions developed to accomplish the young athlete's performance goals.

Youth Developmental Sports Conditioning

  • Postural Training & Re-Education
  • Core & Segmental Stabilization
  • Functional Muscular Strength & Endurance
  • Cardio Respiratory Endurance
